http://butterknifeninja.com/

ButterKnifeNinja is a project that Peter Howse (of Rupert Goes Shopping) and I started in late 2007 (yes, quite some time ago).

From memory, it started out with Peter showing me a possible RGS track, asking me what I thought, as he felt it wasn’t quite RGS material. I remember I really liked it and started to experiment with the track, mainly adding this horrible noise guitar. The noise guitar was totally improvised and was added as I was working on some of my own punk-noise material at the time.

When I showed Peter the rough idea he liked it & said “I think we have something here…” and ButterKnifeNinja was born.
The idea was to mix dub-flavoured electronica with noisy punk-rock styled guitars and of course, the banjo!

Since 2007 we’ve made about 22 demo ideas, and a few finished tracks. Both of us got caught up in our other (multiple) projects as well as our private lives. We hope to get this up and running again now that the site is live.

Stay tuned for more! Also join the fan page on Facebook

I thought I’d do a post in support of a friend of mine, who I believe to be one of the most unique black-metal based artists currently about.
His ideas and production techniques are currently heavily influencing my own black metal project.

Wormlust’s Metal Archives page

Hafsteinn Arsaelsson is a multi-instrumentalist/composer/producer from Iceland. He is the founder of atmospheric black metal project Wormlust (formerly known as Wolfheart).
His other projects include The Harvest plus many more of various genres.

Wormlust’s style, I feel, is an awesome mix of “Deathspell Omega-esque” black metal, 60′s/70′s psychedelic/ambient rock (ala Pink Floyd etc..) and heavy doom/shoegaze drones – but still has its own unique sound.

I really look forward to a full-album of material!
But for now, here are 2 of his demos which are floating around the metal communities of the internet.

(2009) – Wormlust – “Seven Paths” (demo)

Tim Basically recorded the scratches for this a few days before heading off to Canada. I had just showed him the basic beat & had him do stuff for about 10mins.

As much as I love tight & technical hip-hop DJs, I’m from a noise & experimental background when it comes to turntablism, so that’s why I will use some of the ‘not-so-tight’ takes in tracks.

Tim & I may do some more tracks while he’s still in Canada. I’m in the process of compiling samples and beats that I’d like to turn into an Optimus Prime album.

theHEAD formed in 2002, with a line-up of Ben Turley, Tom Taylor and Scott Herbert, sharing multi -instrumental and writing duties.
Their first album, Cubic Meters, garnered local critical acclaim in 2003.
One review in particular contains a great description of theHEAD’s style of
In 2003, theHEAD played around Sydney and Melbourne, inviting along guests like SPOD, Eytan Messiah, Danny Heifetz & Clinton “Bär” McKinnon (Mr Bungle). Airplay on JJJ, 3RRR & 2SER followed.
Ben Turley relocated to London in late 2003. In 2004, theHEAD released a radio-only single Hobo Atlas, featuring Eytan Messiah on MC style vocals. Hobo Atlas was played on 3RRR, 2SER and gained rotation airplay on FBi.
theHEAD has remained apparently quiet since 2004. Scott toured around the country playing synths in SPOD & Merle Morris, and Tom concentrated on solo material.
However, Scott and Tom never stopped continued writing and recording and re-recording theHEAD material. Ben has been delivering tasty bass lines back to base via the ‘net. The fruits of these labours are now finally being realised.
theHEAD have released a new 25 minute, 8 track EP – Butcher’s Paper for free download at http://derKopf.BandCamp.com
Butcher’s Paper is the entree; the main course is yet to come.
Recording for a new album is underway. Drum tracks were laid down by Danny Heifetz at Big Jesus Burger studios in October 2009, with the majority of instrumental tracks recorded in January 2010. Guest vocal recordings are next on the cards. The new, as yet untitled album is slated for release in the second half of 2010.

“The drum breaks were done in conjunction with Greg Hazell, so shout outs to Greg. The track was done in Reaper, where we’re doing all our work these days. All the instruments and vocals are run from Native Instruments Kontakt sampler, except for the synth line from Arturia MiniMoog. Amp emulation and other effects from Native Instruments Guitar Rig. The glitch work on the drum machine and vocals is thanks to a freeware glitch VST written by Dan at http://remaincalm.org.
The aim with this track was to put together something original using the source sounds but not the original arrangement etc. It should stand up individually. It was fun doing some things on this track that we wouldn’t normally do, pushing things a lot further into strange regions, stuff that might sound out of time, or really chaotic. It’s a bit scary, in a good way! Hope you enjoy it.” – Scott Herbert, April 2010

Billy Liar is the project of bassist Andrew Mortensen. It started out as a project for Andrew to pursue his love of turntablism/hip-hop combined with dub and heavy rock/metal. Over time, it has morphed into a group effort that now contains elements from many genres.

With this remix, I decided to venture into the ambient tinged soundscape thing. It started out as being only the intro but then turned into a bit of an all-in of Billy Liar’s genres (dub, ambient, metal and turntablism).
I pretty much stuck to the original song’s arrangement and sections, just altering the groove & placement of certain parts.
The guitarists are Pat ‘Chuksing’ Wong (Leroy) and Nick Soole (Slimey Things). I really like how Nick and Pat trade off each other – both are awesome guitarists but completely different. Matt again is on drums.

Thanks (again) to Mark Clifton for the fretless loan and Nick, Pat & Matt for playing on the track.
