Science-fiction jokes aside, Slimey Things might just still have a new album on the way, but details are scarce.

Before the hiatus, the band went into The Brain to lay down the drums and rough guitars, bass and saxophone for a new album. Nick Soole then continued to work on the album from his ‘Gamma Ray Gun Productions’ studio.

Here’s hoping that the album will be completed sometime in 2012.

Nick is currently residing in Los Angeles and is working on the music to several Australian and American short films.
He is also currently involved with composer Christopher Young‘s

Prior to leaving for the USA, Nick completed his second project for progressive music label The Bird’s Robe.
This one, again under the moniker of The Bird’s Robe Collaboration Band, is entitled
“Still Scores” and is based upon a series of illustrations by graphic design artist Jarrod Elvin (who has done artwork/video for Slimey Things’ last album,
“Quantum Reality T.V”).
The album is a mad mix of and all things you’d expect from a Bird’s Robe Collaboration project – eclectic, creative, varied and driving prog-rock.

The “Still Scores” line-up features:

  Matt Ward

Matt has been busy with a few things since the hiatus.
He is currently involved with 10-piece afro/latin/roots group, Brass Knuckles.

Brass Knuckles also includes members of other Sydney groups such as Jimmy Swouse & The Angry Darts, The Bakery and The BZNZZ.
They play around Sydney now & then, so keep an eye out and catch a show – great vibe and atmosphere!

Matt has also recently hooked up with, Jon Kenner, who was the original drummer for eclectic rock outfit, The Captain’s Package.
With Jon, Matt is playing drums to what he describes as “dark and moody roots/rock, ala Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen…”.
The band consists of Jon Kenner (ex-The Captain’s Package) on vocals/keys, David Sattout (The Angry Darts) on guitar, Matt Williams (Adrift For Days, Captains) on bass-ukulele and Matt Ward on drums/percussion.

He’s also working on his solo material in his small studio.
Maybe we’ll see another Cohnan Wildstyle?

Also, amongst all is musical happenings, Matt is about to open an antique ‘junk’ store.

Ian, as always, is in high demand for his skills on the saxophone. Amongst session work, DJ gigs and teaching, he is also a member of – along with Matt – Brass Knuckles.

Not long after Slimey Things went into (permanent?) hibernation,
Ian formed a new project with members of Darth Vegas, Rica Tetas, Jimmy Swouse & The Angry Darts & Mr Bamboo. The new project goes by the name of Killsong and a recent blurb describes them as:

Killsong write ugly music for beautiful people. Songs about poisonous, vengeful hotdogs and amorous encounters with rabbits. Featuring members of Darth Vegas, Rica Tetas, Jimmy Swouse & The Angry Darts & Mr Bamboo, the band has been described by the only true gauge of quality, three drunk punters, as: “occasionally powerful”, “quite confusing” and “too complicated for me to understand”.

Another group which Ian is busy with is the legendary Frank Zappa tribute band, Petulant Frenzy. This band consists of some of the hottest, most in demand musicians in Sydney/Australia and their live shows are definitely worth catching.

Tristan has been focusing on his film production since the hiatus of Slimey Things. He has been managing and producing various things in film & television.

He also has been working on sound design and short scores for film and television.

• ANDREW MORTENSEN – bass

Andrew Mortensen

Andrew has been busy with a few things since the hiatus of Slimey Things.

Amongst working on the successful remix project, he has been busy with prog-metal band Serious Beak, who recently released their debut album and had their album launch to a packed house.

As usual, Andrew is also working on Volume 5 of the “Re-Fleshed” project. The next volume should start to become available January 2012. Artists that are rumoured to have tracks on this one include, The Alphamama with Studio Tann & AM Frequencies, AM Frequencies, Techinfect, Jerry Craib (bluejuice), Rob Cornish, Matt Roberts, Miss Chloe, Greg Seiler, Anklepants, The Ghost of John Cage, Dyke Destroyer vs AM Frequencies, Invader and  Moz Troniquz.

Over two years in the making, Andrew’s black metal project, Död, is finally nearing completion. Vocal recording and rough mixes are currently in progress. He’s hoping it will be completed around March/April.

Also planned is a recording for his ‘doom-blues’ project, Death Valley Burial Ground. Ideas and very rough demos have been made and proper recording is planned to take place mid 2012.

Death Valley Burial Ground is the most recent project of Andrew Mortensen. With Death Valley Burial Ground, Andrew explores the  dark and atmospheric genre known as ‘doom’.
Taking inspiration from doom/drone acts as well as going back to his blues roots, this project looks to be an interesting one, and one he also hopes to perform live with.

10. DEATH VALLEY BURIAL GROUND – Weather

This track, and project came about by total accident.
It’s such a great feeling when something new comes from a musical ‘accident’.
Basically I had planned on doing a dark-noise remix of ‘Weathermen’.
I had performed a bunch of synth noise and was mixing in the guitar line from the original when I soloed that guitar line.
I really liked the effects and tone, and thought I’d like to maybe add some more guitar, so I picked up the guitar & got ready to lay some down.
What happened next was great. I think I had a phone call or something & had to put the guitar down & leave the room. As I left, my foot caught the lead & the guitar fell over. When I returned and went to play, the guitar had been knocked way out of tune, and randomly too, as the machine-heads had hit the amp before hitting the floor.
The result of this was a bizarre & random tuning. I played a random chord and it just happened to sound great (needed very minimal fixing to be in tune with the recording) and fit perfectly with ‘Weathermen’.
Around this time, I’d also been listening to quite a bit of Earth, Sunn O))) and Bohren & der Club of Gore and I heard this chord I had made, I knew I wanted to write more music in this vein and based around this tuning.
I’ve written a few songs so far, and even also went back to some old compositions that were originally written for Adam Pringle Band – obviously APB was  groove-blues, not doom/metal – but playing with tempo, feel and arrangement has made some work. I plan on getting guests on the tracks too, mostly guitarists. I hope to get Adam Pringle, Julian Curwin, George Rigatos and Lachlan Dale to play on some tracks. I’d say it will be more ‘blues/roots’ than metal, but will still have heavy elements to it. I hope to start recording later this year, and even get some live shows if I can. It will most probably be  instrumental music, unless I come across a vocalist who wants to be involved.

Shouts outs (who have helped or helped influence this project) go to Adam Pringle (give me some baritone brown note), Julian Curwin (the spaghetti twang man) and Lachlan Dale (my brother in DOOOOOM) and  Junko Mortensen (愛してる).
