As it says above, little is known about Semen Torn. All I know is a person by the initials of “S.T” requested to participate, sending me an email from an address of semen_torn.
The email said, (quote)
“hi. i heard about your remix thing. im up for shit. send me files or whateva. S.T”.
I had no idea what to expect, but what I got back is some weird stuff.
It’s dark, gritty, dirty and creepy – a perfect way to end Volume 4. The picture above was sent to me and is apparently art work for the Semen Torn CD-R that’s supposedly floating around.
I have no idea where the element of the original song is, but I think I can hear the bass line from the middle in there.

With this remix I don’t actually remember sitting down to make it this style. I was just experimenting with some beats and loops.
At the time I was listening to a fair bit of “ambient industrial rock” or what some call “shoegaze” or noise-pop, drone-pop, etc. Bands like Jesu, My Bloody Valentine and Whirr (aka Whirl).
Check out Whirr’s album below, really cool stuff
Although my remix is not as full-on and “wall-of-sound” as the above bands, this genre did play a part in this remix as I worked on it. I might do some more ‘shoegaze-esque’ stuff in the future.

Död mainly consists of your typical black metal, but the album also contains 2 long ambient synth tracks, akin to the synth tracks that appear on a few Burzum albums. I got the idea to do a remix using the same synths that are used on the Död album. The original song is in there, but is quite hidden. I guess it could be considered a completely new Död composition, but enough sections and elements from the original track on “Fleisch” are present that it really is a remix/rearrangement, suitable for the “Re-Fleshed” project.
As always, there will be shows happening in 2011 with new songs and new gags.
There’s also some interesting, exciting and different things on the cards.
Lips sealed until something is in concrete.
There’s also the possibility of recording again, either an EP or another album.

Slimey Things

SERIOUS BEAK
As mentioned in a previous post, the ‘prog-grind’ band I’m in will have shows happening in 2011. There’s also the possibility of recording. Niceness

A Beak that is Serious

LEROY (remixes)
Pop/Funk band LEROY has been pretty much in a coma since the departure of founding member guitarist/composer/producer Pat ‘Chuksing’ Wong. Pat relocated permanently to California last year. Before he left he gave me the Leroy EP session files. Throughout 2010 I have been tinkering with remixing the songs from the EP. So far I’ve done about 5 or 6 remixes, some are of the same song but in a completely different genre to the other remix.
I’m hoping to finish all the remixes in mid 2011.
Also hoping to do some shows again as Leroy is such a high-energy band that is really accessible and gets the dance-floor heating up!

AM FREQUENCIES
A number of AM Frequencies albums are planned.
Of course there’s the on-going “Re-Fleshed” volumes (remixes/re-works done by various artists from around the globe). This year we’ll be seeing Volume 4 being available.
I’m planning on doing an ambient recording too.
Also looking into a trip-hop based recording collaborating with Optimus Prime (aka my brother Tim) and also Studio Tann (Tim Hagan aka DJ Jonah).

BUTTERKNIFENINJA
With the ‘upgrade’ of Rupert Goes Studios, and RupertG’s new guitar, it’s quite likely that ButterKnifeNinja will continue working on material.

DYKE DESTROYER
Call it anit-music, free-improv rock, avant-gauze-core or just horrible, horrible noise – Dyke Destroyer is one of the most enjoyable projects I’ve been involved in. Formed a few years ago, the project has a constant rotating line-up (depending on people’s availability), and has performed a handful of live shows. Only just last week the new album was ‘released’ (post on how to obtain it coming shortly). There’s even talk of an unplugged recording.

DÖD
A black metal project which started out as a ‘joke’, to just have a play with writing metal with an orchestral accompaniment. After writing a number of songs, I was actually quite surprised with how decent they sounded, and even had input from fellow other project members (RupertG [ButterKnifeNinja] and Nick Soole [Slimey Things]).
Tracks have all been recorded and now I’m in the process of bouncing down the music in preparation for vocals.

DEATH VALLEY BURIAL GROUND
Doom/drone/blues project which I hope to start laying songs down for. Hoping to get musician pals (old and new) to be involved as guests.
2009/2010 saw me get quite into doom and drone music so there’s some of this style floating around in mind.

UNTITLED EXPERIMENTAL DRONE/DOOM/NOISE PROJECT
Mid last year, Dutch guitarist/multi-instrumentalist/producer Tom Sibren van Iersel contacted me about collaborating on something together. We’d both been listening to a lot of drone and Tom suggested we mix it with noise elements (from all noise areas, such as black noise to harsh Japanese noise to 70s noise to ambient noise). Both of us are extremely busy but hopefully we can get something started.

VIOLENCE IN ACTION
Last year I began to be involved in musical-game group Violence In Action, conceived and led by Lachlan Kerr (Godswounds). It was a great idea and really fun to do, but unfortunately I probably will not be able to be involved due to other commitments.
Feel free to check it out as they’re always looking for people interested in being involved.

If you’re looking at this page, chances are you probably know me & who I am.
I’m the guy behind this whole AM Frequencies thing and the remix project.
I started out playing clarinet as a child, then moving to bass as a teenager. Not long after that I began experimenting with turntables, tapes, sampling and broken electronics, touching on my favourite musical genres including metal, film music, dub, hip-hop, jazz, funk & experimental.

When not at home making noise, I’m playing bass in numerous original and cover bands.

Another one, crazy that it’s a year old…

After giving Nick Soole his track to remix for Volume 1, which was also “Human Resources”, I sort of became obsessed with the song. I would often play along to the track just before practising some other bass stuff (like songs I had to learn for gigs or Slimey stuff etc…) and that’s when I came up with the idea of a re-worked version for solo bass (well, 4 tracks of solo bass).
Around that time I had been listening a lot to Michael Manring. Michael’s solo bass albums have so much going on in them, and as much as I love other solo bass albums by the likes of Jaco, Wooten and Marcus Miller – there’s something about Manring’s solo bass tracks that grabs me. His fretless tone is also probably one of my favourites.

I’m not a ‘chops guy’ and by no means a bass virtuoso, but with the track I wanted to do something similar to how maybe Manring would do it.
I was after creating a calm and floating mood, which then turns into a more unsettled mood – with some simple soloing based around the original version’s sections.
It’s a long track, and it does go on, but that’s because at the time I was also talking influences from ambient music, like Bill Laswell and Brian Eno.
The percussive section at the end is all bass. I sampled various pops, thumb-hits and string scapes to create the sounds of drums and then programmed them into the beats.
If you haven’t checked out Michael Manring, I highly suggest you check out his albums or search him on youtube, there’s some amazing videos of him doing his thing on there.

12. AM FREQUENCIES – Victory (Crimson mix)
Remixed at AM Frequencies December 2009 by Andrew Mortensen
© 2009 Andrew Mortensen

Pretty crazy that I just realised that this remix (and the project all together) is more than a year old… anyway….
Around the time of this self-remix I was listening to quite a bit of Robert Fripp and his ‘Frippertronic‘ stuff.
I decided to take some of the original sections of the song and filter them through some delays akin to how Fripp might delay & loop them.
I used various effects, but the main effect is Elogoxa‘s “Elottronix XL”.
This remix is really nothing special, it was more an experiment but I included it in Volume 3 anyway. It has given me some ideas for a future AM Frequencies album, which will be ambient and utilising similar loop/delay ideas.

10. AM FREQUENCIES – NGC1097 (Near & Far mix)
Remixed at AM Frequencies June 2009 by Andrew Mortensen
© 2009 Andrew Mortensen

The ‘Fleisch’ track on the album actually originally sounded something like this remix – so in theory the album version is more of a remix than this one. I felt the original mix didn’t fit the rest of the album, so I put it aside. Later I came back to it & muted everything except for the main synth – and that’s what appeared on the album.
I then knew I’d work on the intended mix again, so I added some additional instruments and it became a ‘remix’, what you hear above.

The title, NGC1097 is named after the galaxy of the same name which is about 45 million light-years away in the constellation Fornax.

AM Frequencies is one of the music outlets of Andrew Mortensen, most well known as the bassist in sci-fi rock act, Slimey Things.
8. AM FREQUENCIES – Almost Pure (Crash mix)
Remixed at AM Frequencies June 2009 by Andrew Mortensen
© 2009 Andrew Mortensen

This remix also came about by ‘accident’.
I was working on mixing the original “Fleisch” album and just happened to solo the main guitars. I realised it sort of sounded similar to Howard Shore’s score for David Cronenberg’s adaptation of J.G Ballard’s novel “Crash”.

David Cronenberg's "Crash"

J.G Ballard's "Crash"

Howard Shore's "Crash" score

I then watched the movie again and it helped to inspire the remix.

I’m yet to read the book, but will very soon.
If you have not seen the movie, it is a great movie, and same for the score – some of Shore’s best work in my opinion!

That’s about it, enjoy.
